Adding meat makes it complete

As a dehydrated powder, SmartBarf has a long shelf life and it can be kept in a cupboard. It was developed for those raw feeders who find it difficult to prepare a sufficiently varied mix of vegetables and supplements in small quantities. It also saves time and effort for those who require large quantities on a daily basis. A 500gm bag, if fully rehydrated, would weigh 2.5kgs.

All the ingredients in SmartBarf™ were researched and chosen for their nutritional benefits and to create a healthy and balanced addition to a dog’s diet. We do not include any cereals such as wheat, corn or rice, nor do we include soya or cheap fillers such as potato.

  • Herbs, Vegetables & Seaweed (40%): A range of leafy greens, root crops, Mediterranean herbs, medicinal herbs, hedgerow plants and seaweed.
  • Seeds & Nuts (40%): Various meadow, vegetable & herb seeds plus tropical and woodland nuts known for their oils, amino acids, minerals and health benefits.
  • Fruits & Berries (10%): Selections from orchard, Mediterranean & tropical fruits with native hedgerow berries are included for their range of antioxidants and vitamins.
  • Pulses & Beans (10%): Chosen for the positive effects they have on digestion, as a prebiotic and as a source of coenzyme Q10 for energy.

The benefits of SmartBarf™

A number of ingredients have insecticidal, antiseptic, antifungal or antibiotic properties eg aniseed, fennel, mint, oregano, sage, thyme.

Other ingredients were chosen for their gastro-intestinal effects, including digestion, breath freshening & flatulence, as a prebiotic and improved liver performance eg aniseed, beetroot, caraway, carrot, evening primrose, hawthorn, locust bean, milk thistle, mint, nigella.

Still others were chosen for their ability to improve memory, reduce stress & anxiety and to calm eg apple, basil, hawthorn, poppy, pumpkin, sage, walnut.

There are those that have significant levels of vitamins (A, B, C, E and K), or of trace elements (calcium, chromium, iodine, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, zinc) eg asparagus, banana, brazil nuts, broccoli, linseed, poppy, pumpkin, rosehips, seaweed or of growth factors eg safflower, sesame, sunflower

Some ingredients have a good range of antioxidants, amino acids and omega oils eg apricots, basil, broccoli, goji, hemp, mint, niger, poppy, prunes, tomato or are themselves the source of supplements eg Coenzyme Q10 comes from peanuts and L-Tryptophan is extracted from pumpkin.

Perhaps because of their phytocompounds, some appear to improve energy levels by impacting the lungs or the heart eg asparagus, basil, beetroot, chickpea, dates, oregano, peanuts, sunflower, walnut.

Finally, SmartBarf™ now includes peppercorns. This is a popular addition to the anti-inflammatory turmeric paste to improve the absorption of the active ingredient curcumin but it has now been shown to improve the bioavailability of many other nutrients as well.

How to use it

For those of you already giving your dog fresh vegetables, just divide this weight by 5 ie 50gms equals 10gms of SmartBarf™ and is the amount we recommend for a 10kg dog. 10gms is approximately 2 level teaspoons.

• Toy breeds: 0.5-1.5 teaspoons per day (100-250 daily portions per bag)

• Terriers: 2-2.5 teaspoons per day (50-80 daily portions per bag)

• Medium sized breeds: 1-2 tablespoons per day (25-50 daily portions per bag)

• Large breeds: 2.5-3.5 tablespoons per day (15-20 daily portions per bag)

• Giant breeds: 4-9 tablespoons per day (6-12 daily portions per bag)

While SmartBarf™ can be stirred into a suitable pet mince as it is, it is better to rehydrate it first by adding it to twice as much hot water and allowing it to cool before stirring it into the mince. Rehydrated SmartBarf™ should be stored in a fridge or freezer if not used immediately. In a fridge, it should last up to 7 days.
