How do I prepare SmartBarf™?

SmartBarf™ can be stirred into a suitable mince but the nutrients are more easily absorbed if it is first mixed in warm water (two-parts water, one-part powder). Once rehydrated, SmartBarf™ should be stored in a fridge and used within 7 days or, better still, frozen until needed. Feed 1g of SmartBarf™ powder per kg of dog’s bodyweight ie feed a 15kg dog with 15g of SmartBarf™ powder.

How much SmartBarf™ should I give my dog?

SmartBarf™ powder per kg of dog’s body weight, i.e. feed a 15kg dog with 15g of SmartBarf™ powder, per day.
We recommend giving…
Toy breeds between 0.5 and 1.5 teaspoons per day
Small breeds between 2 and 2.5 teaspoons per day
Medium breeds between 1 and 2 tablespoons per day
Large breeds between 2.5 and 3.5 tablespoons per day
Giant breeds between 4 and 9 tablespoons per day

Can I freeze SmartBarf™?

Yes, once you have rehydrated SmartBarf™ it can be frozen until needed

Can all dogs have SmartBarf™, regardless of age or breed?

Yes, SmartBarf™ is created to benefit all dogs, from a Chihuahua to a Great Dane, and every dog in between. Age-wise, it’s best to start with SmartBarf™ once puppies are on solids and no longer require weaning.

Can my puppy have SmartBarf?

It is fine for puppies. The recommended dosage is 1g for every kilogram that the puppy currently weighs. This means they will be fed a more dilute mix compared to an adult.

What are prebiotics and are they found in SmartBarff™?

Prebiotics are fibre-rich foods (oligosaccharides eg FOS, GOS, TOS, inulin) that are mostly digested by gut bacteria and 30% of SmartBarf™ is made up of these foods. They include apple, asparagus, banana, broccoli, cabbage, carob, cashews, chickpeas, chicory, flax, kale, pears, peas, seaweed and tomatoes.

The benefits of gut bacteria fed on good sources of oligosaccharides are the release of nutrients and by-products that protect and nourish their hosts and even affect their mental well-being. More specifically, they inhibit the activity of pathogens, promote the activity of beneficial bacteria, protect from the risk of mineral deficiencies by helping to improve mineral absorption and they lower the secretion of stress hormones.
